Deputy Director, Russian Riverkeeper

My day job is working for Russian Riverkeeper, which works to protect and restore our watershed environment for the benefit of current and future generations. For much of the past 25 years we’ve worked to reduce pollution and habitat destruction in the watershed. One of the things I value the most about the Sonoma County Ag and Open Space is how their work supports our goals at Russian Riverkeeper. There are so many examples it’s hard to choose!

Thinking of Jenner Headlands, that property was facing a major industrial timber harvest plan which would have impacted water quality for the residents of Jenner and likely harmed the Russian River Estuary. Ag and Open Space stepped in with several partners and bought the Jenner Headlands property and protected it forever. That work saved many of the residents of Jenner, Riverkeeper and other conservation organizations the time and expense of battling an illplaced timber harvest. The project also helped the property owners realize profits from protecting the property rather than harming natural resources.

The cherry on the top is the public can now hike the trails of this formerly private property, how cool is that!
