Rancho Modini: preservación y descubrimiento
Modini Ranch is a 1,725-acre property in north east Sonoma County. The original landowners, Jim and Shirley Modini, preserved their property in 2000, primarily for protection of wildlife habitat. Upon their passing, and in an act of great generosity, they donated the property to conservation non-profit, Audubon Canyon Ranch. The land is now home to scientific studies and habitat restoration projects.
Jim y Shirley vivieron en el rancho durante la totalidad de su matrimonio, ¡66 años en total! Originalmente, la propiedad pertenecía a la tía y al tío de Jim, Theresa y Timothy Ingalls, que vivían allí en 1852.
Modini Ranch and another protected land, McCord Ranch North, make up the Modini Mayacamas Preserves and are part of a complex of contiguous protected land totaling over 12,600 acres, supporting a diversity of plant and animal species, including many native plants.
Desde 2004, Modini Ranch ha ardido en los incendios Geysers y Kindcade. Durante el incendio de Geysers, un miembro del personal de Ag + Open Space, que conocía personalmente a los Modini, ayudó a proteger y salvar su hogar en la propiedad. En un viaje de monitoreo reciente, uno de nuestro personal de Stewardship encontró un nuevo amigo lindo: ¡un tritón de vientre rojo! Estos pequeños tritones:
- Se encuentran predominantemente en los condados de Sonoma, Mendocino, Lake y Humboldt;
- Tienen una parte superior de color marrón oscuro para evitar ser notados, pero si se les molesta, tiran la cabeza y la cola hacia atrás para revelar su parte inferior de color rojo brillante para servir como una advertencia a los depredadores potenciales;
- Have enough of a neurotoxin, tetrodotoxin, in their skin to easily kill an adult human, or 7,500 mice;
- Have the ability to regenerate several body parts (like other newts), including their limbs, eyes, hearts, and more.
