Nicholas Farms, protected by the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District (Ag + Open Space) in 1995, is on the Sonoma-Napa County border east of the City of Sonoma, with the hills behind Scribe Winery on the property running up to the county boundary. Its conservation easement protects the scenic landscape and allows for some agricultural use. We will ascend the hillside on a rough fire road to reach the chaparral zone at the top, where we will enjoy huge views of the north bay and explore the adaptations and responses of this plant community to fire. This is a moderate-to-difficult, 2.5-mile hike, with a 600-foot elevation gain. The terrain is uneven with areas of loose rock and soil. We may pass through brushy areas, with brush along the fire road presenting possible exposure to ticks or poison oak. As this is a private property, please do not attempt to navigate the property without the designated leaders.
There is no charge for this outing, as it is made possible by the voters of Sonoma County who fund the work of Ag + Open Space with a quarter-cent sales tax. The Fire Recovery Walk series is also paid for by the Sonoma Valley Ecological Fire Relief Fund. Donations to this fund dedicated to fire education, active response, and prevention are gratefully welcome! DONATE: https://www.sonomaecologycenter.org/sonoma-valley-fires-fund/
