As the morning mist dissipates in the Laguna de Santa Rosa a unique feature appears. Blooming vernal pools scattered throughout the Santa Rosa Plain are unique ecosystems made ever more spectacular by their flitting existence. Join Laguna Foundation and Ag + Open Space on this guided walk through Balletto Field as our Restoration Field Supervisor, Asa Voight, acquaints us with the ecology of the encompassing site. The early morning walk will include identification of flora and fauna, history of the site, and a deep dive into the ephemeral habitat’s most important endangered inhabitants.
There will be limited walking off-trail during this event. Wearing long pants and a long sleeve shirt for protection from sun, grass, and ticks is advised. We recommend rain pants or pants you do not mind getting wet and rain boots – there will be frequent kneeling and crouching to look at small plants. Vernal pools may be dry or holding water in late April, depending on rainfall for the season, hiking boots or waterproof boots will be required, depending on the amount of spring rainfall. Walking will be over short distances on uneven and possibly very wet ground.
PLEASE NOTE: This is an in-person outing. All in-person events follow current Sonoma County health orders and guidelines for group activities. This event will be limited to 20 participants. Finally, please let us know in advance if you can no longer attend so we can offer a spot to someone on the waitlist.
There is no charge for this outing, which is made possible by the voters of Sonoma County who fund the work of Ag + Open Space with a quarter-cent sales tax.
