Note: this is a series with multiple dates April-October. While we encourage people to attend as many workshops within this series as they can, they may also attend as a one day event.

Don’t let the small size of this 8 acre preserve fool you, its connected to the largest freshwater wetlands in Northern California. We will hike down to the water, find the shade of the oaks, observe the waterfowl, raptors, and aquatic life throughout the day. Thank you, to the Open Space District for securing this land and to the Laguna de Santa Rosa Foundation for helping to steward this, and other open spaces throughout the Laguna.

The terrain will consist of trails and bushwhacking through wetland weeds. Depending on conditions, total distance may be up to 2 miles. We will take stops to talk about the region, collect inspiring materials, work independently in our nature journals, & enjoy the view! This is a moderate to strenuous hike with some steep sections.

Please come prepared for changing weather and bushwhacking through tall grass during snake season- long pants and closed toed shoes are a must! Wear layers! Though we won’t be hiking through poison oak, you may find it near the trail. Because the trails are line-of-sight, early departures are a possibility on this trip.

What if it’s raining? We’ll go in a light rain but a heavy rain cancels – if in doubt, call our Outings Line at 524-9318 2 PM. If no special message, it’s a go!

Details:
There is no charge for this outing. It is made possible by the voters of Sonoma County who funded the District’s work with a quarter-cent sales tax, in partnership with the District’s non-profit partner, LandPaths (The District protects land and LandPaths connects you with that land)

Please review the hike options & make sure you are prepared

We will hike at a pace that allows us to stay together in a group

Carrington Ranch is private property and is only open for guided tours like this one

You will be asked to sign a liability waiver prior to the hike

No pets or smoking are permitted and absolutely no smoking pets!

There are no restrooms on our route. There will be plenty of ‘topographic diversity’ – please plan accordingly.

What to bring: Sturdy boots or shoes, warm layers (we will go in a light to medium rain), picnic dinner, snacks & water, binoculars, hiking poles or stick, your own nature journal, pen, pencil, eraser, (water) colored pencils.
