Calabazas Creek Open Space Preserve is a 1,290-acre property owned and protected by the District since 2004. People can visit the property by joining the Volunteer Patrol or by participating in a guided outing. This spectacular preserve located in the heart of the Valley of the Moon features a number of creeks, including Calabazas Creek. Guided tours allow visitors to enjoy the wildflowers, ferns, oaks, redwoods, and open grasslands that cover this diverse property. Trained volunteer patrollers regularly visit and care for the property.

Our volunteers are very valuable to us as they are the “eyes and ears” of our open space preserves. Joining the Volunteer Patrol is a great way to discover this beautiful place to hike in your neighborhood while helping District staff manage and care for the natural resources on the property.

We ask all interested volunteers to participate in an orientation, which is about 3 hours long. It involves 45 minutes covering the basics of volunteering, sharing some background about the preserve, and reviewing the maps and routes. The orientation will be followed by an optional 2-hour hike that should not be missed! Please share this invitation with any friends, family members, and colleagues who may be interested in hiking and helping out on the preserve.

What to bring: Sturdy hiking shoes, hiking poles or a stick if you like (there is a creek crossing, steep terrain, and a short section of rocky area), sun hat, sunscreen, mosquito/tick repellent, sunglasses, water, and a snack. There is poison oak out there, but we’ll be able to avoid it.

Level of Difficulty: Easy (orientation) to Moderate (optional hike)
Leader: Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation & Open Space District

This is a free event but requires an RSVP. For more information, to receive the Volunteer Patrol materials in advance, and to register, contact Leslie Lew at Leslie.Lew@sonoma-county.org.
