Please join the District for a Volunteer Patrol orientation on the spectacular Calabazas Creek Open Space Preserve near Glen Ellen. This nearly 1,300-acre Preserve is owned by the District and was protected in 2004. The Preserve overlooks the Valley of the Moon and features a number of shady creeks. Volunteers can enjoy the wildflowers, ferns, oaks, redwoods, and open grasslands that cover this diverse property. The District is currently developing a Resource Management Plan for the preserve. In the meantime, trained volunteer patrollers regularly visit and care for the property.
Our volunteers are very valuable to us – they are the “eyes and ears” of our open space preserves. Joining the Volunteer Patrol is a great way for you to discover this beautiful place while helping District staff best manage and care for the Preserve’s natural resources.
The training is about 3 hours long and includes about 45 minutes of discussing the nuts and bolts of volunteering, learning about some of the Preserve’s fascinating background, and checking out maps and routes followed by a 2-hour hike. The hike portion is optional but not to be missed!
Please let us know if you are interested so that we can send you the volunteer materials ahead of time. We would love to have you! If you are already one of our volunteers – A BIG THANK YOU! Please share this with your friends who may be interested in hiking and helping out on the preserve.
Meeting spot: the quarry off of Nuns Canyon Road in Glen Ellen. The quarry is located on your 1st left after Nelligan Road. Bring water, sturdy shoes, insect repellent, and a snack.
The hike is steep with uneven footing in a place or two and is considered moderate. For more information and to sign up for this training, please email Leslie Lew at leslie.lew@sonoma-county.org
